LIGHT THAT DOESN’T ILLUMINATE BUT ILLUMINATES

Milena Velcheva’s exhibition at the Basilica of St. Clement was not just a cultural event. It was an act of spiritual fusion, a gesture of love, hope and prayer for peace in a world that increasingly needs light, carrying a message that transcends borders and religions –
peace as an inner state and the embrace as divine mercy.
The central theme of the exhibition, inspired by the embrace between Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, was not chosen by chance. It is an image that has already gone down in history: a moment of true brotherhood between the two leaders of the Western and Eastern churches.
Milena Velcheva transforms this moment into an icon of hope, a symbol that spiritual unity is possible and that love is the path to it. For her, this moment is not only a diplomatic sign, but an embodiment of Christ’s peace, that quiet, deep peace that surpasses human understanding.
The exhibition also included other works with deep spiritual themes – iconic images, scenes from biblical events, landscapes in which nature is presented as a temple.
The artist creates her works with the dry pastel technique with a characteristic approach to light, which does not illuminate, but illuminates. There is a special depth in her paintings, as if the colors were not laid down, but arise from the silence itself. The images radiate an inner light that touches the soul of the viewer.
Her paintings sound like prayers – quiet, deep, saturated with inner strength.
